Pupillage Diary of Events

Each pupil will spend approximately 4 months with 3 separate pupil masters/mistresses so that the full range of Chambers' work can be seen and experienced.

Pupils will be expected not only to read papers for their pupil master/mistress but also to carry out research and provide opinions in writing and orally.  Pupils will be expected to attend conferences, consultations and to accompany their pupil master/mistress to Court.  Pupils will be encouraged to undertake paperwork for other members of Chambers so far as may be reasonable and will be offered the opportunity of seeing both junior and senior members of chambers appearing in Court. Chambers also provides in-house advocacy training for pupils.

In the second six months pupils will conduct their own cases.

Chambers will ensure that the work undertaken by the pupil is sufficiently varied to be able to complete the check list provided by the Professional Standards Department of the Bar Council.

Tenancy Selection

Each pupil master/mistress provides a report to the Pupillage Committee at the end of their period of supervision.  Towards the end of pupillage these reports, together with questionnaires completed by all members of Chambers and feedback received from both clients and the clerks, are considered by the Pupillage Committee.  A decision is then taken whether to recommend the pupil for tenancy.  The  recommendation is normally made in July.

During the course of the pupillage there are regular reviews and a pupil is encouraged to bring to the attention of his/her pupil master/mistress any concerns or wishes.

Pupils Not Taken on as Tenants

It is Chambers' policy to assist pupils not taken on as tenants to find a tenancy/third six months pupillage in other Chambers.

Third Six Months Pupils

Chambers' is not presently seeking to recruit a third six pupil.

Grievance Procedure

Any initial concerns should be addressed to the pupil's pupil master/mistress.  If there is no satisfactory resolution then the matter is referred to the Pupillage Committee who will take up the matter, if necessary, with the pupil master/mistress and/or the Head of Chambers.
