Jason Beer QC and Alan Payne appeared for 14 officers of the Metropolitan Police Service in their challenge by way of judicial review to the decision of the Chairman of the Azelle Rodney Inquiry to refuse to grant their application that they be screened from public view when they give evidence at the Inquiry. The Chairman had decided that, because of fears over their safety, future operational effectiveness and concern for the impact on their private and family lives, each of the officers should give evidence anonymously (i.e. they should be known shown the Inquiry by the use of ciphers in place of their real names), but that they should not be screened from public view when they give evidence at the Inquiry. That decision was challenged by judicial review. The claim came before the Divisional Court on 9th February 2012 (Laws LJ and Simon J). The Court dismissed the challenge, holding that the Chairman's decision was within the range of reasonable decisions open to him. See: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-16974395
